James Jack is an American Asian artist who engages layered histories tied to place as a way to concentrate on instances of positive change achieved through community-led initiatives. He has developed socially engaged art works for the Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, Honolulu Museum of Art, Setouchi International Art Festival, Busan Biennale Sea Art Festival, Institute of Contemporary Art Singapore and the Echigo-Tsumari Triennial. His work focuses on the importance of stories as the foundation for installations that empower oral histories in diverse media ranging from objectless events, video installations and works on paper. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at Satoshi Koyama Gallery (Tokyo), Orford Arts Center (Québec), TMT Art Projects (Fukuoka), TAMA Gallery (New York) and Beppu-Wiarda Gallery (Portland). His writings have been published by Shima, CCA Singapore, Tokyo Arts Council, Blum & Poe Gallery, Satoshi Koyama Gallery, The Contemporary Museum of Hawai‘i, The Japan Times and ArtAsiaPacific. Together with Yoshitaka Nanjo and Shotaro Yoshino he formed the artist collective World Dirt Association in 2014 whose exhibits include Niigata Water and Land Art Festival, SYP Art Space in Tokyo, and Ichihara Art x Mix. After ten years based in Tokyo, Jack was an artist fellow at Social Art Lab in Fukuoka and now has a studio base in Singapore at the point where the mouth of the Pandan River meets the sea.
